  18. <p>     The decision by Actors' Equity to forbid a white British
  19. star from portraying a Eurasian on Broadway may sink the
  20. musical Miss Saigon, but it revives old issues of fairness and
  21. competence. Daring casting has produced wildly mixed results:

  24. </p>
  25. <p>     Alec Guinness - A PASSAGE TO INDIA. In David Lean's 1984
  26. classic adaptation of E.M. Forster's novel, the British actor
  27. faithfully portrayed Professor Godbole, an ascetic Hindu wise
  28. man.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     John Lithgow - THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP. Cast as a
  31. transsexual former pro football player, Lithgow gave an
  32. unsmirking performance and won a 1982 Oscar nomination.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     Laurence Olivier - OTHELLO. The acting demigod was by no
  35. means the first Caucasian to play the Moor of Venice, but this
  36. 1965 release proves that he was the finest of them.

  38. <p>     Luise Rainer - THE GOOD EARTH. In an era when demeaning
  39. racial stereotypes were de rigueur, she won a 1937 Best Actress
  40. Oscar for her dignified depiction of a poor Chinese farmer.
  41. </p>
  42. <p>     Ava Gardner - SHOW BOAT. She received mixed reviews for her
  43. 1951 portrayal of mixed-blood singer Julie La Verne, a part
  44. denied to Lena Horne. Gardner's songs were dubbed for the film.

  46. <p>TRASH
  47. </p>
  48. <p>     Jack Palance - CHE! His bombastic portrayal of Fidel Castro
  49. in this 1969 flop gave the movie cult status. The campy effect
  50. was heightened by the casting of Egyptian-born Omar Sharif as
  51. Che Guevara.
  52. </p>
  53. <p>     Elvis Presley - STAY AWAY, JOE. Among the King's lazy epics,
  54. this 1968 flick is notable for the way Presley and co-star
  55. Burgess Meredith impersonate Native Americans as manic
  56. subhumans.
